CQC guides.

Practical, step-by-step guidance drawn from our hands-on experience supporting registrations and inspections across England.

01

How to register with CQC

Any provider carrying out a regulated activity must register with CQC before delivering care. Here is the typical path for a new provider.

Steps

  1. Confirm the regulated activities and service type that apply to you.
  2. Appoint a suitable Registered Manager and Nominated Individual.
  3. Write your Statement of Purpose and supporting policies.
  4. Complete DBS checks for directors and the Registered Manager.
  5. Submit a complete provider and Registered Manager application.
  6. Respond promptly to CQC queries through assessment and interview.
02

Preparing for a CQC assessment

CQC assessments look at evidence against the five key questions. Strong preparation focuses on real practice, not just paperwork.

Steps

  1. Map your evidence against Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led.
  2. Make sure care plans and risk assessments reflect current needs.
  3. Check medicines, safeguarding and staffing records are up to date.
  4. Gather feedback from people you support, families and staff.
  5. Run a mock inspection to test how staff explain their practice.
  6. Build an action plan for any gaps, with clear owners and dates.
03

Writing a strong Statement of Purpose

Your Statement of Purpose is a legal document that sets out who you are, what you do, and where. CQC reviews it closely.

Steps

  1. Describe your aims, objectives and the values of your service.
  2. List your regulated activities and service types accurately.
  3. Set out the needs of the people you intend to support.
  4. Include your registered address and the areas you cover.
  5. Name your Registered Manager and Nominated Individual.
  6. Keep it consistent with your application and other documents.
04

Passing the Registered Manager interview

CQC interviews the proposed Registered Manager to test their knowledge, fitness, and understanding of the service.

Steps

  1. Know your Statement of Purpose and policies in detail.
  2. Be confident explaining the five key questions in practice.
  3. Understand safeguarding, the Mental Capacity Act and duty of candour.
  4. Be ready to describe how you manage risk and quality.
  5. Prepare real examples of how you would handle incidents.
  6. Show how you would monitor and improve the service over time.

These guides are for general information only and reflect CQC guidance current at the time of writing. Always check the latest requirements on the CQC website, or speak to our team for advice tailored to your service.
